“Heartbeat” 2018 Acrylic on Canvas
This painting is the synthesis of a lot of things. But the inspiration was a story I heard on the north slope that in the past, the shaman listened to the heartbeat of the oldest woman in the village, to determine the tempo of his drum beat.
I wanted to illustrate the story because
it, and so many other stories I have been told about the shamanic tradition in Alaska feel true, pure and poetic in a way that nothing else does. They inspire me, and I try my best to be respectful in my interpretations. I have spent years finding out more about my family’s shamanic and herbalist traditions, but there’s not much left that my elders remember. My middle name is a family name that means “Divination”, it is a relic from my family lineage of oracles.
